The Museum is located in the historic Southern Railway Spartanburg Union Depot at 298 Magnolia Street. Take a step back into history and learn about how the railroads were connected to the textile and peach industries in SC. Learn about the development of railroading in Spartanburg and the Upstate of SC. Check out the display about the Hayne Car Shops that once employed 1,100 to maintain Southern Railway’s fleet of railroad cars. Learn to become a telegrapher with the operating telegraph system. Ring the 1940 locomotive bell. Visit the gift shop for railroad themed items. The Southern Railway Caboose is currently undergoing a major renovation and is currently closed to the public, however the trackside observation deck is still available for you to view the Norfolk Southern trains that pass by the depot. Located in the Museum is a dispatcher-like ATCS display of train locations along the NS, in real time. The gift shop has been temporarily relocated into the Museum lobby and has a number of HO scale models for sale. The inventory changes periodically, as we receive donations of various scale model trains.

We are typically open on Wednesdays and Saturdays 10am-2pm. Admission is free.  We hope the caboose will be open to the public by the convention date, but no guarantees.
